Professor Richard Rijnvos is a Professor of Composition in the Department of Music at Durham University, where he has held the Chair in Composition since 2014. He previously served as Head of Composition (2009–present) and earned a Higher Doctorate from Durham in 2012. His career includes a DAAD scholarship for postgraduate studies in Freiburg and a 6-year residency with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (2011–2017).
His research focuses on orchestration, new music aesthetics, and cycles like GRAND ATLAS (representing continents through orchestral works) and Riflesso (companion pieces to 20th-century classics). Notable compositions include NYConcerto (Buma Toonzetters Award, 2007) and Die Kammersängerin (Matthijs Vermeulen Prize, 2011).
Rijnvos has collaborated with prestigious ensembles worldwide and supervised doctoral students like Chris Massa and Ritsuko Ueda. His work bridges composition with multimedia and interdisciplinary art, reflecting influences from Cage, Beuys, and Calvino.
