Richard Luxton

Professor Richard Luxton is the Director of the Institute of Bio-Sensing Technology (IBST) at the University of the West of England (UWE), within the Faculty of Health and Applied Sciences (HAS). He holds a PhD in neuro-immunology from the Institute of Neurology in London and has over 30 years of academic and industry engagement experience. His research focuses on developing rapid diagnostic technologies for healthcare, environmental, and food safety applications, with over 70 publications and patents.

Education: BSc in Clinical Chemistry (National Health Service), PhD in Neuro-Immunology (Institute of Neurology, London).

Research interests include biosensor development, immunoassays (especially magnetoimmunoassays), impedance spectroscopy, and point-of-care diagnostics. He pioneered the rapid magnetic-biosensor for immunoassays, commercialized through Miatech Biosolutions, where he serves as Chief Scientific Officer (CSO).

Collaborations include MedilinkSW, North Staffordshire Health Trust, Public Health England, and universities like Imperial College London and Bristol University. He chairs the International Conference on Bio-sensing Technology, underwritten by Elsevier, which emphasizes industry-academia collaboration.

Scientific contributions include the development of portable sensors for propofol monitoring, cocoa disease detection, and urinary tract infection diagnostics. Awards include Fellowship of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (FIMLS).

Grants and funding have supported the Biomedical iNet and Business Technology Centre (BTC) for industry-academia partnerships. The IBST, founded in 2008, collaborates with over 800 companies, fostering innovation in biosensing technologies.
