Richard L. Possemato is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology at NYU Grossman School of Medicine and Director of Admissions at the Vilcek Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences. He holds a PhD from Harvard University and completed postdoctoral training at the Whitehead Institute, MIT in Sabatini Lab.
His research focuses on identifying altered metabolic pathways in cancer cells, particularly investigating iron homeostasis, iron-sulfur cluster metabolism, and metabolic perturbations affecting nucleotide synthesis and DNA replication. His lab employs advanced genetic screening, metabolomic methods, and mammalian cell culture techniques. Key areas include tumor metabolism, serine biosynthesis, mitochondrial function, and ferroptosis mechanisms.
Recent work highlights discoveries about CAD enzyme regulation in cell cycle progression, IRP2's role in iron-sulfur cluster sensing, and NFS1's protective role against ferroptosis in lung tumors. His publications span Nature, Molecular Cell, and Science Advances, emphasizing translational oncology and metabolic vulnerabilities.
Possemato's lab operates at Smilow 611, NYU Langone, and maintains an active presence in cancer metabolism research with collaborations extending to institutions like MIT and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
