معرفی
Professor Richard Kitney is a leading academic in Biomedical Systems Engineering at Imperial College London's Faculty of Engineering. He serves as Professor of Biomedical Systems Engineering, Chairman of the Institute of Systems and Synthetic Biology, and Co-Director of the EPSRC National Centre for Synthetic Biology and Innovation. He co-founded the Imperial College Hub for Synthetic Biology (CsynBI) and SynbiCITE, the UK's national industrial translation centre for synthetic biology. His work focuses on synthetic biology applications in healthcare, industrial biotechnology, and bioeconomic innovation.
Kitney holds a DSc (Eng) from the University of London and a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Imperial College. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, Royal Society of Edinburgh, and multiple international biomedical engineering institutions. He was awarded the OBE for contributions to biomedical IT and honored with prestigious fellowships, including the Honorary Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons.
His research spans synthetic biology, bioengineering, and medical imaging. He pioneered synthetic biology workflows, biofoundry systems, and standards for biopart datasheets. His teams developed tools like SynBIS (Synthetic Biology Information System) and cMatch for genetic construct analysis. He actively engages in public policy, co-authoring the UK Synthetic Biology Roadmap and advising the Ministerial Leadership Council.
Kitney has published over 300 papers and been featured in media for public science outreach. His current initiatives include advancing the bioeconomy through automation, standardization, and global alliances among biofoundries. He advocates for interdisciplinary education to address emerging challenges in synthetic biology and healthcare.
