Dr. James Hindley is an Honorary Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry at Imperial College London and co-director of the Membrane Biophysics Group. He is affiliated with the fabriCELL executive team and the Institute of Chemical Biology Centre for Doctoral Training. His research focuses on developing synthetic cells—biomimetic systems that replicate cellular functions for biomedical applications. Key areas include signal transduction pathways, stimuli-responsive cells, and high-throughput production methods.
He supervises students in the CDT in Chemical Biology and collaborates with the Membrane Biophysics Platform and the EPSRC-funded CAPITALS Programme Grant. His work bridges chemical biology, materials science, and biomedical engineering, with applications in targeted drug delivery and diagnostic technologies.
Research highlights include engineering light-responsive artificial cells and magnetic modulation of biochemical synthesis. His articles span synthetic cell design, vesicle dynamics, and nanoparticle interactions with membranes, reflecting expertise in bottom-up synthetic biology and biomimetic materials.
