Richard Huggett is an Honorary Research Fellow in the Department of Geography at the University of Manchester. He holds a First Class BSc (Honours) in Geography from University College London (1970) and a PhD from UCL (1973). After teaching at Haberdashers’ Aske’s School, he joined Manchester in 1975 as a Lecturer in Geography, retiring early in 2011. His research focuses on environmental conservation, Earth system science, and geomorphology, with a current book project titled Conserving the Natural World: Concepts and Debates. His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to environmental protection.

Key research interests include pedosphere dynamics, regolith-soil debates, and interdisciplinary nomenclature. He has advised Matt Szabo on environmental ethics. Recent publications explore Earth system frameworks, conceptual debates in environmental science, and soil-regolith classification.
