Anna Hughes is a Senior Lecturer in Physical Geography - Quaternary Science at the University of Manchester, leading the Quaternary Environment and Geoarchaeology (QEG) research group. She is affiliated with the Mapping Computing and Geographic Information Science (MCGIS) and Cryosphere Research At Manchester (CRAM) networks. Her research focuses on paleoglaciology, ice sheet dynamics, and glacial geomorphology, with a particular emphasis on the Eurasian Ice Sheet Complex and its interactions with climate.
Education:
- PhD in Physical Geography (University of Sheffield, 2009)
- MSc in Quaternary Science (Royal Holloway, University of London, 2004)
- BSc in Geography (University of Sheffield, 2002)
Research Interests:
- Reconstruction of ice sheet evolution using geomorphological and geochronological data
- Glacial landform analysis via remote sensing and GIS
- Chronology of ice sheet retreat and climate change impacts
- Open-access datasets for ice sheet modeling validation (e.g., DATED-1)
Key Projects:
- PalGlac: Integrating landform data with ice sheet models
- RISES: Quantifying ice sheet changes
- PPF-Alpine: Alpine biome evolution
Teaching & Supervision: Supervised PhD students (e.g., Christiaan Diemont, Laurence Dyke) and external examiner roles across multiple institutions. Teaches glaciology, digital elevation modeling, and paleoglaciology courses.
Labs/Teams: QEG group, MCGIS, and CRAM networks at Manchester, contributing to interdisciplinary cryosphere research.
