Dr Jeremy Ely is a Senior Lecturer in Physical Geography at the University of Sheffield's School of Geography and Planning. His research integrates glaciological observations with numerical modeling to understand ice sheet dynamics, glacier change in the Andes, Antarctic hydrology, and paleo-ice sheet reconstructions. Funded by NERC, he leads the £2.46M "Deplete and Retreat" project investigating Andean water resources under climate change.
Dr Ely earned his PhD from the University of Sheffield in 2016, followed by a postdoctoral position and NERC research fellowship. His educational background provides the foundation for his interdisciplinary approach to glaciology and climate science.
His research focuses on four interconnected pillars:
- Andean Water Resources: As PI of the NERC Highlight Topic "Deplete and Retreat," he deploys field instrumentation across South America and develops integrated climate-glacier-hydrology models.
- Glacial Geomorphology: He confirmed the morphological continuum of subglacial bedforms through UAV surveys and field excavations, advancing understanding of ice-bed interactions.
- Paleoglaciology: Through BRITICE-CHRONO and PALGLAC collaborations, he improves model-data integration for reconstructing past ice sheets.
- Antarctic Hydrology: He co-discovered widespread meltwater streams on Antarctic ice shelves and investigates their impact on ice flow stability.
His recent publications (2021-2025) reveal accelerating glacier loss in the Andes and Alaska, with increasing emphasis on model-data integration for paleo-ice sheets and meltwater impacts on ice dynamics. Key trends include the application of high-resolution modeling to water resource forecasting and the use of geological archives to constrain future ice sheet behavior.
Dr Ely's scientific contributions have been recognized with:

He has secured £3.05M in research funding as PI, including a NERC Independent Research Fellowship (£589k) and ESA Category-1 grant. As course lead for the MSc(Res) in Polar and Alpine Change, he supervises graduate students and teaches modules spanning polar science and field methods. His UNESCO advisory work informs international climate policy.
Dr Ely chairs the international working group on Impacts of Changes in the Mountain Cryosphere and co-leads Sheffield's Ice and Climate Research group, fostering collaborations across glaciology, hydrology, and climate science.
