Dr. Andrew Sole is a Senior Lecturer in Physical Geography at the University of Sheffield's School of Geography and Planning. He holds an MA in Physical Geography (First Class Honours) from the University of Edinburgh (2005) and a PhD in Glaciology from the University of Bristol (2010). His career includes postdoctoral research at the Universities of Aberdeen and Edinburgh (2009–2012), a Faculty Research Fellowship at Sheffield (2012), and promotions to Lecturer (2017) and Senior Lecturer (2020).
Dr. Sole's research specializes in ice sheet dynamics, particularly the Greenland Ice Sheet, using integrated methodologies including satellite remote sensing, field observations, and numerical modeling. Key focus areas include:
- Atmospheric forcing on ice motion and meltwater hydrology
- Ocean-glacier interactions at marine-terminating outlets
- Subglacial drainage evolution and its impact on ice flow
- Surface-to-bed hydrological connectivity
- Climate change impacts on polar ice masses
His publication record (2019–2025) demonstrates consistent focus on Greenlandic and Antarctic glaciology, with recurring themes of subglacial hydrology, ice-ocean interactions, remote sensing innovations, and climate-driven ice loss. Recent work increasingly incorporates machine learning and high-resolution modeling to analyze decadal-scale changes.
Dr. Sole leads field campaigns in Greenland and Antarctica, collecting ice motion, hydrology, and bathymetry data. He collaborates internationally on projects like the ESA Sentinel satellite initiative and contributes to glacier-ocean interaction modeling consortia.
