Richard Halverson is a Professor and Kellner Family Distinguished Chair in Urban Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Education. He serves as the Associate Dean for Innovation, Outreach, and Partnerships. His research focuses on applying Learning Sciences principles to educational leadership and digital media, particularly in game-based learning and formative feedback systems.
Education: PhD in Learning Sciences from Northwestern University (2002), MA in Philosophy (1987), BA in Philosophy and History from Marquette University (1984). Prior to academia, he was a high school teacher and administrator.
Key Projects: Co-director of the Comprehensive Assessment of Leadership for Learning (CALL) initiative, co-founder of the Games+Learning+Society Research Center, and leader of the CyberSTEM project. His work integrates distributed leadership theory, practical wisdom (phronesis), and technology to improve school systems.
Awards: Community Engaged Scholar Award (2017, 2018), M Award (2014). Active in designing games for learning (e.g., Progenitor X, Virulent!), and formative assessment tools for school leaders.
Teaching: Courses include Technology and School Leadership, Distributed Leadership, and Evaluating Teaching. Affiliated with Educational Psychology and the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery.
