Tom Halverson serves as Dean of the Faculty and Armstrong Endowed Professor of Mathematics at Macalester College. He leads academic departments in personnel and academic matters, overseeing faculty hiring, development, and evaluation for both tenure-track and non-tenure-track positions, as well as curriculum alignment with Macalester's mission. As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, he participates in the Faculty Personnel Committee, Educational Policy and Governance Committee, and Faculty Advisory Council.
Halverson received his BA from Saint Olaf College in 1986 and completed both his MA and PhD at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1993 under the supervision of Georgia Benkart. His academic journey includes sabbatical periods at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton (1999) and the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in Berkeley (2008).
His research specialty lies in algebraic combinatorics, particularly examining how combinatorics can illuminate algebraic structures and vice versa, with specific focus on matrix representations of groups and algebras. This interdisciplinary approach bridges abstract algebra with discrete mathematics, creating connections between seemingly distinct mathematical domains. His teaching portfolio includes calculus, linear algebra, computational linear algebra, algebraic structures, representation theory, and topology.
His scholarly contributions include work on set-partition tableaux and diagram algebra representations, reflecting his expertise at the intersection of combinatorics and algebra. His recent co-authored article "Gems from the Work of Georgia Benkart" in the Notices of the AMS demonstrates his engagement with mathematical history and contemporary research.
As Dean of the Faculty, Halverson manages departmental appointments, supports academic chairs, oversees external reviews, and serves as a key academic administrator at Macalester College while maintaining his scholarly identity as a mathematician.
