Professor Richard Grose serves as Professor of Cancer Cell Biology and Deputy Centre Lead at the Centre for Tumour Biology within Queen Mary University of London's Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry. He holds a BSc and PhD and leads research focused on cancer-stromal interactions.
His laboratory investigates cellular communication within tumour microenvironments, particularly how cancer cells interact with stromal cells and extracellular matrix to influence invasion and therapy response in breast and pancreatic cancer. Core research themes include Targeting Tumour Cells, 3D Modelling, Cell Signalling, and Resistance to Therapy, with emphasis on fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) pathways.
Analysis of his 2012-2022 publications reveals sustained investigation into nuclear translocation of FGFR1 and its role in cancer progression, consistently linking molecular mechanisms like FGF signalling to clinical challenges in invasion and drug resistance across multiple cancer types.
Professor Grose secures substantial funding including Cancer Research UK (£473,002 for breast cancer degradome research) and Barts Charity grants (£104,971 for pancreatic cancer microenvironment studies). He chairs the Barts Pancreas Tissue Bank Access Committee and mentors research teams investigating cellular crosstalk.
Additional leadership roles include Dean for Global Engagement at the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Honorary Professor at Wenzhou University, and service on grant review panels for Breast Cancer Now, Irish Cancer Society, and National Science Centre (Poland).
