Richard Formica, MD, is a Professor of Medicine (Nephrology) and Surgery (Transplant) at Yale School of Medicine. He serves as Director of Transplant Medicine and leads Yale Medicine’s transplant program, emphasizing holistic patient care and interdisciplinary support. His clinical roles include Director of the Outpatient Transplantation Service and Medical Director of Adult Kidney Transplantation at Yale New Haven Hospital.
Education: Received his MD from Boston University School of Medicine (1993) and completed residency at Boston University Medical Center (1996), chief residency at Boston City Hospital (1997), and fellowship at Yale School of Medicine (1999).
Research focuses on kidney transplantation policy, immunosuppressive strategies, and long-term outcomes in facial and hand transplantation. He co-authored studies on donor-specific antibodies, C4d biomarkers, and economic valuation of organ donation volunteers. His work includes policy contributions like the 2014 kidney allocation system and clinical trials for hypertension treatments.
