Richard Emsley is a NIHR Research Professor and Professor of Medical Statistics and Trials Methodology at King's College London, within the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN). He leads the Department of Biostatistics & Health Informatics and serves as Academic Director of King’s Clinical Trials Unit and Theme Lead for Trials, Genomics and Prediction at the NIHR Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre. His roles include overseeing the NIHR Research Support Service Hub and contributing to national health research initiatives.
Education: BSc in Mathematics (2000-2003) and MRC-funded PhD in Biostatistics (2003-2007) from the University of Manchester. He held academic positions at the University of Manchester before joining King's in 2018, including roles as Deputy Director of the Manchester Clinical Trials Unit. He has held MRC fellowships and spent time as a visiting researcher at Harvard Chan School of Public Health.
Research focuses on clinical trial methodology, causal inference, and precision medicine, with applications in mental health. Key projects include the AVATAR2 trial (digital therapy for psychosis), the CLEAR trial (clozapine in early psychosis), and the REACH-ASD trial (autism caregiver intervention). He also pioneers trials addressing self-harm, depression, and suicide prevention in diverse populations.
Awards and recognitions include NIHR Research Professorship and the Society for Clinical Trials Thomas C. Chalmers Student Scholarship. He contributes to national committees such as the NIHR Academy Board and chairs the NIHR Statistics Group.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Trials Methodology Research Group and the Mental Health & Neuroscience Clinical Trial Statistics Group. Collaborates on initiatives like the MRC-NIHR Trials Methodology Research Partnership and the European Causal Inference Meeting (Euro-CIM).
