Dr. Richard Edema is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Agricultural Production, Makerere University, and serves as the Centre Director of the World Bank-funded Makerere University Regional Centre for Crop Improvement (MaRCCI). Over nine years, he transformed MaRCCI into a regional capacity-building model in East Africa. He holds a Ph.D. in Plant Pathology (Molecular Virology) from Ohio State University (2001), preceded by B.Sc (1994) and M.Sc (1996) degrees in Agriculture from Makerere University.
His research spans plant breeding, biotechnology, and biosafety, with a focus on crop improvement for maize, cassava, and sorghum. He led projects including AGRA/RUFORUM regional capacity-building programs, BIOEARN sorghum improvement, and molecular marker validation. Recently, he initiated a recognized cowpea improvement program and trained over 50 MSc/PhD students, securing $11 million in research funding.
