Peter Waiswa

Peter Waiswa serves as an Associate Professor at Makerere University School of Public Health, College of Health Sciences, Uganda, and holds a visiting Researcher position at Karolinska Institutet, Sweden since 2013. A Ugandan medical doctor with public health specialization, he previously spent eight years as a district medical officer with Uganda's Ministry of Health before transitioning to academia.

His educational background features a joint PhD and Post-Doctoral fellowship awarded through collaboration between Makerere University and Karolinska Institutet, reflecting his dual-institutional research foundation.

Dr. Waiswa's research program critically examines health systems strengthening and implementation science with concentrated focus on maternal, newborn, and child health outcomes in resource-limited African contexts. His work systematically bridges evidence generation and policy translation to address systemic barriers in healthcare delivery.

He co-leads the ongoing Uganda Full Country Evaluation of GAVI immunization support (2014–present) and holds influential advisory positions including membership in Uganda's National Immunization Technical Advisory Group (UNITAG) and the World Health Organisation's Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health Advisory Board. As founder and coordinator of both the INDEPTH Network Maternal and Newborn Research Group (Accra) and Makerere University's Maternal and Newborn Centre of Excellency, he drives institutional capacity building across continental research networks.

Dr. Waiswa maintains active engagement in health policy formulation through sustained advocacy efforts spanning local communities, national governments, African regional bodies, and global health forums to advance evidence-based maternal and child survival strategies.
