Richard Burger is the Charles J. MacCurdy Professor of Anthropology at Yale University and a leading archaeologist specializing in the emergence of civilization in the Central Andes. He is affiliated with the Department of Anthropology within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and serves as Curator in the Division of Anthropology at the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History.
His research focuses on the development of early Andean civilizations through extensive fieldwork in Peru, particularly at key sites such as Chavín de Huántar, Huaricoto, Cardal, Mina Perdida, and Manchay Bajo. Burger has pioneered the use of obsidian and cinnabar sourcing to trace ancient trade and interaction networks across pre-Columbian South America.
