Dr. Richard Austen-Baker is a Senior Lecturer in the Law School at Lancaster University, part of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS). He convenes courses such as Law of Contracts and teaches Business Law and the English Legal System. His academic journey includes a law degree from Cardiff Law School, Bar studies at the Inns of Court School of Law, and a PhD from Reading University under Professor T.A. Downes, focusing on relational contract theory. He was called to the Bar by Gray's Inn in 1997 and awarded the Mackaskie Prize that year.
Dr. Austen-Baker has taught at the Universities of Warwick, Reading, and Leeds before joining Lancaster in 2004. His research focuses on common law, particularly contract law’s history, theory, and doctrine, alongside commercial law, tort law, and legal remedies. Current projects include a second edition of his book on implied terms and research in legal history. He actively engages in consultancy on contract management and dispute resolution and provides media commentary on contract law and consumer rights.
Professional roles include convenor of the Contract and Commercial Law section of the Society of Legal Scholars (2008–2010) and External Examiner for the University of Hull. He is affiliated with Lancaster’s Centre for Law and Society.
