Richard Appleman is an Emeritus Professor and former Chair of the Bass Department at Berklee College of Music. He pioneered the integration of the electric bass into Berklee's curriculum with key collaborators like Steve Swallow. A renowned performer, he has played with luminaries such as Lionel Hampton, the Boston Pops, and in Broadway productions of Cats, Les Misérables, and Miss Saigon. Appleman is a prolific author, having written influential texts including Reading Contemporary Electric Rhythms and Berklee Jazz Bass. He is also a columnist for Bass Player magazine and an active member of the International Society of Bassists. His career spans military service (U.S. Navy, 1964–1968), academic leadership, and contributions to music education.
