Rian Brown-Orso is an Associate Professor of Cinema and Media at Oberlin College, where she teaches experimental filmmaking, documentary production, and time-based art. She holds a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art (1994) and an MFA in Film from UC San Diego (2000). Her work bridges visual art and cinema, focusing on women’s issues, social justice, and innovative animation techniques.
Key research projects include The Foreigner’s Home (2017), a documentary exploring Toni Morrison’s artistic vision, and Blue Desert, a National Geographic-supported Antarctic expedition film. She co-founded the Apollo Outreach Initiative to engage urban youth in media education and spearheaded the 2012 renovation of Oberlin’s Historic Apollo Theater.
Her awards include three Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Awards and the Best Documentary Prize at the Seattle Jewish Film Festival. Brown-Orso’s films have screened globally at venues like the Rotterdam Film Festival, British Film Institute, and Harvard Film Archive.
