Geoff Pingree is a Professor of Cinema Studies and English at Oberlin College, part of the College of Arts and Sciences. He is an Emmy award-winning documentary filmmaker and director of StoryLens Pictures, a nonprofit producing films on pressing social issues. His work aims to foster education, public dialogue, and societal change. He holds a PhD and MA from the University of Chicago.
Research interests include socially engaged multimedia storytelling, journalistic skills as life skills, and personal narrative cinema. Courses taught include Belonging: Socially Engaged Multi-Media Art Making and Documentary Production.
Notable works include The Foreigner's Home (reviewed in Anthropology News) and The Return of Elder Pingree. He collaborates with alumni and interdisciplinary teams, such as on the film Fireboys, which documents incarcerated firefighters in California. His Emmy Award underscores his contributions to documentary filmmaking.
He leads StoryLens Pictures, emphasizing community engagement through film. His teaching and research bridge cinema, media, and English, focusing on social impact and narrative innovation.
