Dr Rhiannon Phillips is Deputy Associate Dean Research at the Cardiff School of Sport & Health Sciences, Cardiff Metropolitan University, where she leads the Applied Psychology and Behaviour Change Research and Innovation Group. She serves as the research lead for the British Psychological Society Division of Health Psychology and is a member of the British Psychological Society Research Board.
Her research focuses on understanding risk perception and decision making in relation to common infections and reproductive health. Dr Phillips is particularly interested in facilitating shared decision-making in healthcare settings, communication of health-related risk, and helping people build skills to manage their emotional and behavioral responses to health threats through Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and psychoeducation. She is leading the establishment of SABRE Cymru, a Welsh social science rapid response pandemic research network, and a network for technology solutions supporting reproductive decisions for people with long-term conditions.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on patient-centered approaches to healthcare decision-making, particularly in reproductive health, chronic disease management, and pandemic response. Her work frequently employs mixed-methods approaches to understand patient perspectives and improve healthcare communication and outcomes.
Dr Phillips has secured over £6.5M in research funding throughout her career and has published more than 50 peer-reviewed articles in high-impact journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet Psychiatry, and the BMJ. She leads significant research initiatives including SABRE Cymru and collaborates extensively across healthcare disciplines to improve patient outcomes through evidence-based interventions.
Her current research activities include establishing technology solutions for reproductive decision-making support and leading pandemic response research networks, demonstrating her commitment to translating research into practical healthcare applications that address pressing public health challenges.
