Rhiannon Lord is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Health, Sport and Wellbeing at Abertay University, where she serves as Programme Leader for the BSc (Hons) Sport Development and Coaching degree. She is actively engaged in teaching, research, and outreach, focusing on the sociology of sport, identity, and equity.
Her educational background includes a BSc (Hons) and MA in Sport and Physical Education and Sport, Culture and Society from Cardiff Metropolitan University, followed by a PhD exploring the embodied lives of trampoline gymnasts. She joined Abertay University in 2014.
Her research centers on athletic identity construction, embodiment, and narratives in sport, with broader interests in inequality, gender equity, and disability inclusion. She employs qualitative, phenomenological, and narrative methodologies to explore how athletes construct and maintain identities over time. Her work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health, equity, and quality education.
The most recent articles reflect consistent engagement with themes of identity, disability, gender, and qualitative inquiry, often using autoethnography and narrative methods. Publications span journals such as Disability and Society, Social Sciences, and Soccer and Society, as well as policy reports on children’s sport during and after the pandemic.

She has contributed to public policy through collaborations with SportScotland on gender equity training and with British Blind Sport’s First Steps project. She supervises research students and serves on advisory boards including the Scottish Gymnastics Board Advisory Group and Cambridge Scholars Publishing Group. She is also a member of the Active Girls Dundee working group, promoting equitable sport opportunities for girls.
Rhiannon Lord leads key modules such as Social Sciences for Sport and Exercise, Research Methods, and Social Issues in Sport, shaping curriculum and student learning in sport sociology and development.
