James Brighton

Dr James Brighton serves as a Senior Lecturer in the Sociology of Sport and Exercise at Canterbury Christ Church University (CCCU), UK, within the School of Sciences, Psychology, Arts and Humanities, Computing, Engineering and Sports. He is an active member of the Sport and Body Cultures (SBC) research group and maintains his office at the Fleming building (Fg32) in Canterbury.

His research centers on critical examinations of:

• Disability representation in sport and fitness contexts
• Sociocultural constructions of the athletic body
• Identity formation among disabled athletes

Methodologically specializing in interpretive qualitative approaches including ethnography and narrative analysis, his current investigations explore wheelchair bodybuilding practices, body modification among spinal cord injury athletes, and the conceptualization of disabled athletes as sporting cyborgs. He actively supervises research in disability sport identity, fitness culture dynamics, and body perfectionism phenomena.
