Dr. Reza Shaker Ardekani is a Guest Researcher at Leiden University's Institute of Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology (CADS). His current research, part of the Project 'One Among Zeroes |0100|: Towards an Anthropology of Everyday AI in Islam', examines the intersections of AI and Islamic practices in Southeast Asia using computational text analysis. He holds a PhD in Urban Sociology/Cultural Geography from the University of Groningen, with prior degrees from Iran and the University of Amsterdam.
His academic journey spans Urban Studies, Urban Planning, and Cultural Geography. Research interests include (bio)politics, digitalization, and the socio-cultural impacts of technology in Muslim-majority regions. Methodologically, he combines urban ethnography with computational social science, leveraging big data from social media, academic texts, and media content.
Prior to Leiden, he worked in urban planning, academia, and consultancy in Iran, and pursued interdisciplinary studies in the Netherlands focusing on gentrification and the experiences of Muslim communities in urban spaces. His work bridges anthropology, sociology, and digital humanities to explore how AI discourse and technologies shape everyday life in Islamic contexts.
