Bart Barendregt is a Professor of Digital Anthropology and Vice-Dean of Research at the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences, Leiden University. He holds the UNESCO Chair of the Anthropology of Digital Diversity and leads the NWO-VICI project on Everyday AI in Islam. His research focuses on digital technologies, religious practices, and Southeast Asian cultures, particularly Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore.
Research Interests: Digital ethnography, AI ethics, religious meaning-making in technology, and the intersection of Islam with modernity. His work explores how digital tools reshape cultural practices, with special attention to Muslim communities' engagement with AI and social media activism.
Publications highlight critical analyses of digital activism, music's role in Islamic identity formation, and the socio-cultural impacts of technology. His most recent work examines AI's ethical dimensions in Islamic contexts, reflecting his broader interest in technology's cultural embeddedness.
