Murfianti's research centers on digital anthropology in Indonesian contexts, examining vernacular social media practices including Instagram identity construction, commodity culture, and social climbing behaviors. She investigates the circulation of fake news and meme ecosystems, with current focus on Islamically inspired digital content and its relationship to religious literacy in post-truth Indonesia. Her collaborative work explores wayang beber (traditional Javanese storytelling) as sustainable tourism iconography.
As a PhD candidate supervised by Professor Bart Barendregt (Anthropology of Digital Diversity) and Assistant Professor John Boy at Leiden University, she analyzes how digital and religious literacy shape production and dissemination of Islamic memes and TikTok content within Indonesia's evolving media landscape.
