Zane Kripe is a PhD candidate and Lecturer at Leiden University's Institute of Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology within the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences. Her research focuses on geek culture, technological futures in Southeast Asia, and online ethnography, supported by the NWO-funded 'Towards a Comparative History of Digital Futurities' project. She holds an MSc in Media Technology (Leiden University) and a BA in Political Science (Riga Stradins University).
Her work explores how technology enthusiasts in Singapore and Indonesia shape digital futures through initiatives like BarCamps and Hackerspaces. She also investigates the theoretical implications of online ethnography, teaching courses such as 'Anthropology of Information Society'. Kripe has published in venues like the International Institute of Asian Studies Newsletter and contributes to blogs like the Leiden Anthropology Blog, discussing topics ranging from digital detox experiences to the ethics of data management in anthropology.
Her research engages with debates on globalization, innovation ecosystems, and the intersection of technology with cultural identity. She collaborates with institutions like LIACS (Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science) and is supervised by Professors Peter Pels and Bart Barendregt. Kripe’s interdisciplinary approach bridges anthropology with digital studies, emphasizing the role of 'non-governmental elites' in shaping societal trajectories through technological aspirations.
