Reyna L. Gordon is an Associate Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She serves as Director of the Music Cognition Lab and holds secondary appointments in the Department of Psychology, Vanderbilt Brain Institute, Vanderbilt Genetics Institute, Vanderbilt Kennedy Center, and the Curb Center for Art, Enterprise, and Public Policy.
Her educational background includes a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Arts from the University of Southern California, an M.S. in Neuroscience from the University of Provence, and a Ph.D. in Complex Systems and Brain Sciences from Florida Atlantic University. She completed postdoctoral training in developmental disabilities at the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center.
Dr. Gordon's research investigates the role of rhythm in language development and disorders from behavioral, cognitive, neural, and genetic perspectives. Her work integrates methods such as EEG, eye-tracking, neuroimaging, genetics, and behavioral coding to explore connections between rhythm, grammar, and communication. She leads interdisciplinary research on developmental language disorder, autism spectrum disorder, and the impact of musical training on language skills.
Her work has been supported by NIH NIDCD funding, an NIH Director’s New Innovator Award, and an NSF grant. She is passionate about public science communication and has contributed to outreach through media features on NPR, BBC, and PBS, as well as leadership roles in the Society for Music Perception and Cognition.

Dr. Gordon mentors students and researchers across neuroscience, psychology, audiology, and speech-language pathology. She leads multiple funded research projects, including studies on rhythm and grammar, genetic underpinnings of language disorders, and music-based interventions for children with developmental disabilities. The Music Cognition Lab fosters collaboration among faculty and trainees from diverse disciplines.
The Music Cognition Lab, co-directed by Dr. Gordon, Dr. Miriam Lense, and Dr. Srishti Nayak, conducts cutting-edge research in music, language, and social development. It includes specialized research groups focusing on rhythm and genetics, music and social engagement, and behavior, health, speech, and hearing. The lab employs both lab-based and computational methods and engages in community partnerships and telehealth interventions.
