Professor Reiko Tanaka is a Professor of Computational Systems Biology & Medicine at Imperial College London's Department of Bioengineering (Faculty of Engineering). Her research focuses on understanding biological control systems through mathematical and computational approaches, with applications in dermatology, allergy, and systems medicine. She leads the Tanaka Group, which develops tools like EczemaNet (AI-driven eczema assessment) and EczemaPred (severity prediction framework). Her work integrates systems biology, machine learning, and synthetic biology to address diseases like atopic dermatitis, asthma, and fungal infections.
Education & Career:
- PhD in Mathematical Engineering from the University of Tokyo
- Assistant Professor at Keio University
- Visiting Associate at Caltech under John Doyle
- Research Scientist at RIKEN's Biological Control Systems Lab
Research Interests: Her lab explores:
- Computational modeling of skin barrier dysfunction in eczema
- AI-driven dermatology diagnostics
- Fungal pathogenesis and antifungal resistance
- Systems biology of epithelial barriers
Using methodologies like mechanistic modeling, Bayesian inference, and deep learning.
Grants & Collaborations: Funded by British Skin Foundation, NIHR, Asthma+Lung UK, and UKRI. Collaborations include Imperial's Microbiome Network, Artificial Intelligence Network, and Leverhulme Centre for the Holobiont.
Labs & Teams: The Tanaka Group includes researchers in systems biology, machine learning, and synthetic biology. Notable alumni have advanced to roles in academia and industry.
