Dr. Rehanna Kheshgi is an Associate Professor of Music at St. Olaf College, specializing in ethnomusicology with a focus on community engagement, gender studies, and social justice. She actively bridges academic research with diaspora communities, notably through her project 'Somali Songs: Building Community through Sound.'
- Educated at Goshen College (B.M.), University of London (M.M.), and the University of Chicago (Ph.D., 2016)
Her research spans intergenerational knowledge sharing in Somali diaspora communities and gender/sexuality dynamics in Assamese Bihu festivals. Supported by prestigious grants including Fulbright and American Institute of Indian Studies, her work combines performance-based methodologies with activism.
Recent publications analyze queer theory in festival performance, reality television's role in cultural commodification, and urban transformation of traditional practices. She received the 2024 St. Olaf Faculty Social Justice Award for her community-building initiatives.
