Anna Stirr is an Associate Professor in the Asian Studies Department at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. She specializes in South Asian and Himalayan studies, focusing on music, politics, gender, and migration. Her academic and artistic work bridges ethnomusicology, cultural theory, and performance.

Stirr’s research explores:
- Cultural intimacy in Nepal’s dohori question-answer songs and their global media circulation

Her recent work spans Himalayan environments, global music industries, and Nepali diaspora communities. She has contributed to edited volumes and peer-reviewed journals, with themes including migration’s emotional geographies, gendered musical expression, and cultural policy.
Scientific recognition includes:
- Best Documentary (International) and Best Director (Documentary) at Darbhanga International Film Festival, 2020, for Singing A Great Dream: The Revolutionary Songs and Life of Khusiram Pakhrin
Stirr teaches courses covering South Asian performing arts, Muslim societies, gender in Asian performance, and inter-Asia migration. She also performs Hindustani classical bansuri flute and Nepali folk music, engaging with oral teaching traditions.
