Professor Guilnard Moufarrej is a faculty member in the Languages and Cultures Department at the United States Naval Academy. Her research focuses on Arabic music and culture, with specializations in ethnomusicology, music therapy for war-traumatized children, music and gender, and liturgical practices in Near Eastern Christian communities.
Her work includes studies on the exploitation of Syrian children in propaganda through music and social media, the role of music in Arabic language retention among learners, and the empowerment of women through music in male-dominated societies. She conducts fieldwork on Maronite communities in the U.S. diaspora, exploring how music reinforces religious and ethnic identity.
Collaborations include projects with Midshipman David Alicea on refugee children in Jordan/Lebanon/Turkey, Emmy-nominated composer Kareem Roustom on folk song arrangements, and neuroscientists at Harvard studying music-brain connections. Recent presentations include the Society for Ethnomusicology (2018) and MESA annual conferences.
Current projects include writing on Lebanese female singers during the civil war and a Maronite church festival analysis. No scientific awards are explicitly listed, but her work bridges anthropology, musicology, and social justice themes.
