Ahmad Beydoun is a Professor at the University of Beirut, Lebanon, specializing in Lebanese political history and contemporary crisis analysis. In May 2008, he delivered four guest lectures at the Collège de France under Henry Laurens' chair in Contemporary History of the Arab World.
His research centers on Lebanon's political evolution, with critical focus on sectarian dynamics, resistance to deconfessionalization, and the interplay between internal community structures and external regional forces. Key themes include the legacy of the 1943 National Pact, the Taef Agreement's implications, sovereignty challenges, and the transformative impact of the 1975-1990 civil war on institutional functionality.
Beydoun's analysis emphasizes the non-repetitive nature of Lebanon's crises, highlighting how the crystallization of Lebanese Shi'ism and the Iranian-Syrian alliance have fundamentally reshaped strategic realities. His work rejects high-level abstractions in favor of singular examinations of intra- and inter-community configurations, political arbitration vacuums, and the viability of Lebanon's confessional political system.
