Cyma Farah is a postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Oxford, affiliated with the ERC-funded project 'Moving Stories: Sectarianisms in the Global Middle East.' She holds a PhD (2023) in History from Rice University, alongside a graduate certificate in Women, Gender, and Sexuality. Her earlier education includes a BA and MA in History from the American University of Beirut. Prior to academia, she worked as a social studies teacher in Lebanon.
Her research focuses on French colonialism in the Levant, particularly the interplay between legal frameworks and societal dynamics. Central themes include the 1926 Lebanese constitution, the 1925-1927 Great Syrian Revolt, gendered models of power, rural history, and the evolution of sectarianism/secularism under colonial rule. She emphasizes humanistic perspectives on lived experiences under legal systems.
Farah’s work bridges global, imperial, and gender history, contributing to debates on colonial governance and socio-political identities. She is part of the interdisciplinary 'Moving Stories' team exploring sectarianism’s transnational dimensions.
