Reet Alas is a Lecturer in French Language at the University of Tartu's Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Institute of Foreign Languages and Cultures. With a Doctoral Degree in French Language and Literature (2012), she has held full-time academic roles since 2008, including prior positions at the Institute of Germanic, Romance and Slavonic Languages and Literatures.

Her research focuses on contrastive linguistics between French and Estonian, particularly modal verbs, conditional tenses, and evidentiality markers in translated and comparable texts. She has contributed to digital learning objects on Estonian folk culture for French learners and participated in e-learning initiatives.
Publications between 2004–2013 include studies on quoting verbs in journalism, subjunctive equivalents in Estonian, and evidentiality markers in French-Estonian comparative frameworks. Her work bridges theoretical linguistics with applied pedagogy.
Administrative roles include serving on the Council of the College of Foreign Languages and Cultures (2015–2019) and collaborating with contrastive linguistics research teams. She has also worked part-time as a translator at Luisa Translation Agency since 2014.
