Tanel Lepsoo is an Associate Professor of French Literature at the University of Tartu's Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Institute of Foreign Languages and Cultures. He has held various academic roles including Vice Director and Head of Department since 2008. His research focuses on 20th-century French literature, theatre studies, and translation studies, with particular emphasis on contemporary French drama and intermediality. Lepsoo has been actively involved in administrative roles, including leadership positions at the Institute of Germanic, Romance and Slavonic Languages and Literatures.
Education: PhD in French Literature (University of Tartu, 2006), MA in Theatre and Stage Arts (Sorbonne-Nouvelle, Paris, 1994), BA in French Language and Literature (University of Tartu, 1993).
Research interests include: French modernist and postmodernist literature, performance studies, cultural reception, and the role of translation in cross-cultural communication. He has translated works by Sartre, Camus, Barthes, and others into Estonian.
Key projects include enhancing international collaboration in French studies and exploring the representation of Soviet cultural legacy in Estonian theatre. His recent work analyzes the intersection of political history and dramatic writing in post-Soviet contexts.
