Rebekah Sims is a Lecturer in Education at the University of Strathclyde, affiliated with the Strathclyde Institute of Education. Her primary research focuses on higher education pedagogy, particularly intercultural competence development and integrating writing instruction into teacher education programs. She leads an international research group advancing qualitative tools for measuring intercultural competence through student reflective writing. As Principal Investigator of a Carnegie-funded project, she explores academic writing development among mature teacher education students in Scotland. Her work emphasizes widening access for underrepresented groups and enhancing ethical practices in higher education.
Education: She holds a Doctor of Philosophy (2021) and Master of Arts (2016) from Purdue University, both focused on culturally responsive teaching and ritual transmission. She also serves as an honorary chaplain, fostering inclusivity for international students.
Research Interests: Her work bridges pedagogy and ethics, including research ethics beyond procedural compliance, and leveraging science fiction to enhance ethical imagination in STEM fields. She co-leads the Institute Ethics Committee and collaborates on interdisciplinary projects to strengthen ethical collaboration between schools, universities, and governments.
Grants & Projects: Current initiatives include the Academic Literacy in Teacher Education (Carnegie-funded) and a SUII-funded project on shared research ethics frameworks. She also collaborates with Drs. Mark Haw and Jordan Kistler on STEM ethics through science fiction.
Teaching: She designs courses across PGDE, BA Primary Education, and MSc programs, embedding academic literacies to support all students. She supervises PhD, EdD, and MSc students.
Labs/Teams: Part of an interdisciplinary team exploring STEM ethics via science fiction, and leads the WriteIC research group (http://writeic.org).
