Rebecca "Beck" Krefting is Professor of American Studies at Skidmore College, affiliate faculty in Gender Studies, Black Studies, Intergroup Relations, and Media & Film Studies, and Director of the Center for Leadership, Teaching, and Learning. A former stand-up comic, she holds a B.A. in English and Psychology from the University of Alabama in Huntsville, an M.A. in Women’s Studies from Ohio State University, and a Ph.D. in American Studies from the University of Maryland, College Park.
Research & Teaching: Krefting’s transdisciplinary work focuses on feminist comedy studies, histories of stand-up, post-apocalyptic culture, and critical pedagogy. She regularly teaches courses such as Disorderly Women, A Humorous (Dis)Course, Black Feminist Thoughts, Post-Apocalyptic Film and Literature, and The Funny Thing About History, alongside classes on American foodways, whiteness, and U.S. diversity.
Awards & Recognition: Among her accolades are the Ralph A. Ciancio Award for Excellence in Teaching (2020), Graduate Teaching Fellow designation at the University of Maryland (2009-10), and a graduate teaching award nomination at Ohio State (2004). She has been an invited keynote and symposium speaker at institutions across the U.S. and Europe, including UCLA, Aarhus University, and the University of South Carolina.
Scholarly Impact: Krefting’s monograph All Joking Aside: American Humor and Its Discontents (Johns Hopkins, 2014) maps the economy and politics of socially charged humor. Her essays appear in journals such as Comedy Studies, Studies in American Humor, and Journal of Cinema and Media Studies and in edited volumes from Cambridge, Oxford, Routledge, and Texas presses, cementing her reputation as a leading voice in feminist comedy scholarship.
