Hannah Schwadron is an Associate Professor in the School of Dance at Florida State University (FSU). She teaches dance history, cultural politics, improvisation, and performance, and directs the Arts in NYC semester program, combining coursework with arts internships and professional engagement. Her research focuses on Jewishness, humor, migration, and dance, culminating in her award-winning book The Case of the Sexy Jewess: Dance, Gender and Jewish Joke-work in US Pop Culture (Oxford UP, 2018), which won the de la Torre Bueno Award. She co-edited Funny Moves: Dance Humor Politics (Oxford UP, 2025), the first volume on dance humor studies.
Her education includes a Bachelors in American Civilization from Brown University, an MFA in Experimental Choreography, and a PhD in Critical Dance Studies from the University of California, Riverside.
Her creative works include the film Klasse (2015), addressing Holocaust education and migration, which won multiple awards. She curates Field Studies, a creative lab for performer-writers, and collaborates across disciplines. Schwadron is active in community initiatives, serving as Vice President of the Dance Studies Association and contributing to organizations like the Tallahassee Bail Fund and Leon County Youth Detention Center programs.
