Ray Enke is an Associate Professor in the Biology Department at James Madison University (JMU) since 2013. He holds a PhD in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology from Johns Hopkins School of Public Health (2010) and a BS in Biology from Salisbury University (2000). His research focuses on epigenetic regulation in retinal neurons, particularly DNA methylation dynamics in chicken and human retinas, and he actively develops innovative genomics and bioinformatics educational materials for undergraduate courses.
Key research areas include retinal development, plant-microbe interactions, and epigenetic mechanisms influencing gene expression. He teaches courses such as Foundations of Biology, Genetics, and Genomics. His lab collaborates on projects involving transcriptomics, metagenomics, and CRISPR-based tools to study ocular tissues and microbial communities.
Dr. Enke has mentored numerous students in research, including those listed as co-authors in his publications. His work bridges basic science with educational outreach, emphasizing hands-on genomic analysis training for undergraduates through course-based research experiences (CUREs).
