Raul Ferrer Conill is an Assistant Professor at Karlstad University's Department of Geography, Media and Communication within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. His research focuses on the intersection of journalism, technology, and gamification, with particular emphasis on news production/distribution in mobile societies, gamified engagement strategies, native advertising, and datafication processes in media. He advises bachelor's theses and teaches courses like Digital Aesthetics (MKGB60) and ICT and Social Change (MKGB71), serving as course convenor for these. Ferrer Conill's work bridges empirical research with practical applications, addressing questions about gamification's implications in newsrooms and organizational adoption. He collaborates with research groups like NODE (News & Opinion in the Digital Era) and Geomedia, and reviews for journals such as Journalism Studies and Mobile Media & Communication. His recent publications examine topics including Scandinavian social media logics, AI's impact on journalism in China, and the role of hyperlinks in national online networks. Ferrer Conill holds ORCID 0000-0002-0501-2217 and ResearcherID G-3347-2014.
His research explores how data-driven practices reshape journalism, including studies on African and European civic tech organizations' data journalism, temporal patterns of mobile news alerts, and boundaries between editorial and commercial content. He has contributed to debates on native advertising's ethical challenges and the theoretical underpinnings of audience engagement in news consumption. Ferrer Conill's work frequently intersects with questions of media ethics, technological adaptation, and cross-cultural comparisons in digital communication.
