Helena Atteneder is a Lecturer at the Institute of Media Studies within the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Tübingen, where she serves at the Chair of Digitalization and Social Responsibility. Her academic work bridges media studies, communication science, and critical geography with a specific focus on geomedia studies. She maintains an active research profile with numerous publications in leading journals and serves in significant academic leadership roles.
Dr. Atteneder's research centers on theories of space/place, media, and power, with particular emphasis on critical-dialectical perspectives on geomedia and media technologies. Her work examines algorithmization and datafication phenomena, especially regarding ubiquitous geodata collection, exploring both autonomy-promoting and surveillance-enhancing tendencies. She also investigates data protection, privacy (particularly 'geoprivacy'), inequality, and stereotype research from media and communication science perspectives. Her research demonstrates a consistent critical approach to understanding the power dynamics embedded in digital spatial technologies.
Her recent publications reveal a strong focus on geomediatisation, spatial power relations, and critical approaches to geospatial technologies. The articles demonstrate interdisciplinary connections between media studies, geography, philosophy, and critical theory, with particular attention to how digital mapping technologies shape our understanding and appropriation of space. Her work consistently addresses issues of power asymmetry, surveillance capitalism, and spatial citizenship within increasingly datafied environments.
