Raphael Schlembach is a Senior Lecturer in Criminology at the University of Brighton, within the School of Humanities and Social Science. He is affiliated with the Law, Society and Justice Research Excellence Group and the Centre for Applied Philosophy, Politics and Ethics. Before joining Brighton in 2015, he taught at UCLan, Liverpool Hope, and Sussex Universities. He holds a PhD from the University of Manchester, an MSc from the University of Manchester, and a BA from the University of Kent.
His research focuses on social movements, undercover policing, critical theory, migration and citizenship, policing and security, nationalism, and public inquiries. Notable works include his book ‘Spycops’, examining the Undercover Policing Inquiry, and ‘Against Old Europe’, analyzing European social movements. His research has been cited in legal submissions and parliamentary reports, including the House of Lords 2024 inquiry report.
His recent work includes investigations into the Brook House Inquiry on immigration detainee mistreatment, funded by the Socio-Legal Studies Association. He serves as an External Examiner at Birmingham City University (2020–2024) and previously held roles on the editorial board of Sociological Research Online (2015–2021). His supervisory interests span politics, sociology, and criminology doctoral proposals.
