Charles Crichlow is a Senior Lecturer in Criminology and Policing Studies at the University of East London (UEL), affiliated with the Department of Law & Criminology within the School of Childhood and Social Care. He currently leads the BSc Professional Policing Studies Pre-Join and Top-Up degree programs, designed for experienced police personnel and retirees. With a 30-year career in Greater Manchester Police, Crichlow developed expertise in community policing and fairness in policing practices. He holds an MA in Crime Law and Society (Criminology) from the University of Manchester (2008).
His research focuses on Black policing perspectives, criminal justice reform, and institutional racism. Notably, he conducted a review of the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry report (2009), influencing the subsequent Smith Report (2012) on police professionalism. He served as President of the National Black Police Association (NBPA), contributing to national policing policy. In 2020, he retired from policing and received the Queen's Policing Medal (QPM) for services to policing.
Crichlow collaborates with the Centre for Policing, Innovation, Enterprise and Learning (PIEL). His teaching emphasizes practical experience, integrating academic rigor with real-world policing challenges. His research output includes critical analyses of institutional racism in policing, as seen in his 2020 report for the Tutu Foundation UK.
