John Marriott is a Senior Lecturer in Policing (PEQF) at the University of East London, affiliated with the Department of Law & Criminology under the Royal Docks School of Business and Law. He retired from Thames Valley Police in 2022 after 20 years of service, specializing in child protection and safeguarding. His roles include module lead for the Degree Holder Entry Programme (DHEP) and the Professional Policing Degree module. He holds a BSc (Hons) in Chemical Engineering, an MSc in Police Science and Management, and a PGCert in Learning & Teaching in Higher Education.
Research Interests: His work focuses on policing decision-making, particularly the psychological and ethical dimensions of fear of error in critical cases. He recently submitted a PhD proposal titled "Not on my watch": the fear of getting it wrong. He collaborates with the Policing Innovation, Enterprise and Learning (PIEL) Centre to modernize policing methodologies aligned with Peelian Principles.
Teaching and Partnerships: Leads courses such as Police Leadership, Safeguarding Vulnerable Populations, and Mentally Disordered Offenders. Teaches on programs including the BSc Policing Studies Top-Up, LLB Law with Criminology, and BA Criminology & Criminal Justice. Partners with Babcock for Metropolitan Police recruit training.
Professional Background: Former Detective Sergeant with leadership roles in the Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH) and Child Abuse Investigation Unit (CAIU). Holds ORCID: 0009-0008-2315-5300.
