Randy L. Buckner is the Sosland Family Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at Harvard University, affiliated with the Center for Brain Science. He directs the Psychiatric Neuroimaging Research Division at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and is faculty at the Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging. He holds a BA and PhD from Washington University in St. Louis. His research focuses on large-scale brain networks underlying cognition, neuropsychiatric disorders, and aging. Key areas include neuroimaging techniques, genetic mechanisms of brain variation, and individualized brain phenotyping. Collaborations span institutions like the NIH Human Connectome Project and the Harvard Aging Brain Study. His work bridges basic neuroscience with clinical translation, emphasizing personalized medicine.
Research Themes:
- Architecture of Human Brain Networks
- Dysfunction in Neurodegeneration and Neuropsychiatric Illness
- Deep Phenotyping in the Individual
- Genetic Mechanisms of Individual Differences
- Evolutionary Mismatches in the Modern World
Advances in his lab include high-resolution neuroimaging, digital phenotyping via smartphones, and the Brain Genomics Superstruct Project. Students and postdocs in his lab explore topics like Alzheimer’s, schizophrenia, and genetic risk factors. The Buckner Lab emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, integrating imaging, computational methods, and behavioral data.
