Theodore D. Satterthwaite, MD, MA, is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. As the McLure Associate Professor in Psychiatry & Behavioral Research, he leads PennLINC since 2020 and previously directed the Imaging Analytics of the Brain Behavior Laboratory (2015-2019).
- Education: Medical and graduate training at Washington University in St. Louis under Randy L. Buckner, followed by psychiatry residency and neuropsychiatry fellowship at Penn under Raquel E. Gur.
Dr. Satterthwaite's research combines multi-modal neuroimaging, genetics, and clinical data to map normal/abnormal brain development and elucidate neuropsychiatric illness origins. His work emphasizes reproducibility, methodological innovation, and transdiagnostic approaches to mental health.
Recent articles focus on personalized functional network topography, white matter development, neurovascular dynamics during altered states, and harmonization of multimodal imaging data. These studies leverage machine learning, large-scale datasets (e.g., Philadelphia Neurodevelopmental Cohort), and open science frameworks like fMRIPrep Lifespan.
- Scientific Awards:
- Brain and Behavior Research Foundation Klerman Prize
- NIMH BRAINS Award
- NIH Merit Award
- Multiple Teaching Awards
As a principal investigator of nine NIH R01 grants, he drives advancements in neuroimaging pipelines (e.g., XCP-D, DeepPrep) and investigates biomarkers for schizophrenia, anxiety, and depression. His lab, PennLINC, bridges computational neuroscience with clinical applications.
