Randolph J. Nudo serves as University Distinguished Professor & Vice Chair of Research in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Kansas School of Medicine, and Director of the Landon Center on Aging where he holds the Marion Merrell Dow Distinguished Professorship in Aging.
His academic credentials include:
- BS in Psychology/Statistics from Pennsylvania State University
- MS in Psychology from Florida State University
- PhD in Psychology/Neuroscience from Florida State University
- Post Doctoral Fellowship in Physiology at University of California, San Francisco
Dr. Nudo's pioneering research in the Cortical Plasticity Laboratory investigates neural mechanisms of recovery after brain injury, with emphasis on rehabilitative training-induced functional plasticity and implantable device development. His work bridges basic neuroscience and clinical interventions for stroke and traumatic brain injury, focusing on brain self-repair capacity and novel therapeutic approaches through neural engineering.
His scientific excellence is recognized through the prestigious NINDS Javits Investigator Award and fellowships from the American Heart Association and American Society for Neurorehabilitation.
As Principal Investigator, Dr. Nudo maintains continuous NIH funding since 1985 for stroke recovery research. He collaborates with Case Western Reserve University engineers on Department of Defense-funded implantable microdevices for traumatic brain injury and co-leads spinal cord injury neural interface projects. His laboratory integrates biomaterials engineering for cranial defect repair and develops wearable deep-structure brain imaging technologies.
The Cortical Plasticity Laboratory operates as an interdisciplinary hub connecting neuroscientists, electrical engineers, biomaterials specialists, and clinicians to advance brain repair therapeutics for age-related neurological disorders.
