Randall Umstead is the Gordon and Sarah Herring Chair and Professor of Music at Furman University, serving as Chair of the Department of Music. Previously, he spent 15 years at Baylor University, including roles as Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, Director of Vocal Studies, and Faculty Senate Chair. He holds a DMA and MM from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and a BM from Oklahoma Baptist University.
As a performer, he is a two-time Tanglewood Music Center fellow and has collaborated with orchestras such as the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and Johannesburg Festival Orchestra. His teaching has produced students admitted to prestigious programs like Yale University and the University of Michigan.
Awards include the Regent Honoris Causa from Baylor (2019-2021) and recognition for contributions to academic excellence. He actively contributed to institutional governance through Baylor’s Board of Regents and National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS).
